THE CHALLENGE

When losing control on snow or on a slope, a skier may need an additional solution to rapidly increase interaction with the surface and help reduce sliding speed. The project also addresses a second challenge: after a fall, accident, or immobilization in a mountain environment, quickly locating the user can be critical for rescue operations. The objective was therefore to design a compact wearable device combining mechanical braking assistance with an electronic emergency location and alert system.

OUR SOLUTION

The developed solution is a technical glove incorporating a set of short claws connected to an internal mechanical support. A first version of the mechanism was produced using 3D printing to validate dimensions, glove integration, and the overall operating principle. A second version was then manufactured in stainless steel, including a stainless-steel internal support to improve the mechanical strength of the device. The concept also integrates an electronic safety module using GNSS satellite positioning. In an emergency situation, an SOS function can associate an alert with the user's geographical position. The prototype was tested and successfully demonstrated the overall concept. Testing also identified several areas requiring further improvement, particularly regarding ergonomics, mechanical integration, and safety.

HOW IT WORKS
  1. 01Putting on the GloveThe user puts on the glove, which integrates the claw mechanism and the electronic safety module.
  2. 02Braking AssistanceIn case of loss of control or sliding, the short stainless-steel claws can increase contact with the snow and assist deceleration.
  3. 03Force TransferForces applied to the claws are transferred through an internal stainless-steel support integrated into the glove structure.
  4. 04GNSS PositioningThe electronic module uses GNSS signals to determine the skier’s geographical position.
  5. 05SOS ActivationIn an emergency, the user can activate the SOS function to transmit or make their location available for faster rescue localization.
